Invoke The Power of ‘What If’ Questions

How has your 2024 started?

Today I’m sharing the power of ‘What If’ questions.

We all live within the limitations of thought and emotional patterns that keep us safe, and sometimes…..stuck.

This is the job of our ego, to keep us safe.

It’s important to respect and honour the work of our ego.

Afterall, we need to be kept safe, fed, protected, and shielded from the dangers of the world.

Our ego becomes malevolent when it stops us from taking bold, brave, courageous actions that APPEAR dangerous.

  • Is having a conversation with your manager about their leadership style really dangerous, or is holding you back from performing at your best?

  • Is having a conversation with your partner about how they’re showing up really going to threaten you, or will it deepen your connection?

  • Is taking a break from family life to invest in yourself really being selfish, or will it empower you to show up more powerfully for those you love?

From a young age we’re conditioned to be reasonable, logical, rational and realistic (urgh, personally hate that last one).

So how do we break free from our conditioned thinking and the patterns that follow?

One tool I rely on and share with many clients is ‘what if’ questions.

Here’s a few examples:

Let’s say you want to increase your confidence so you can ask for more opportunities at work. You might start to curiously ask yourself: “What if I am the most confident person I know? What am I DOING now?”

If you wanted to become less reliant on the opinions of others you might ask: “What if I have all the validation I need? What does that FEEL like in my body right now?”

How about if you want to invest more time in your wellbeing? You might ask: “What if I believe investing in my wellbeing is an act of love for those I care about? What am I DOING now?”

Maybe you want to be more productive: “What if I am extraordinarily productive? what am I DOING right now?”

The trick with ”what if” questions is to actually ask the question and listen…

Embody the feeling of what it is like in that moment right now…

Then patiently wait for a response to come in.

The key then is to act on that response.

You WILL get an insight, and it’s up to you to take the leap of faith from there.

If you don't feel comfortable, safe or ready to take that step, that’s totally normal, no need to judge yourself!

Learning you are blocked or stuck at that point is a powerful insight and a hint that perhaps some deeper work is required.

This is a massive win!

You see, if you can't fully rely on who you are right now to take the action you truly desire to take, simply practise being in the body of the version of yourself that will.

This work is called Heart & Brain Coherence and has been studied by the great Joe Dispenza. If you’re interested in diving deeper into this check him out on Diary of a CEO here.

Personally I have 4 different daily reminders that pop up on my phone at 8am, 1pm, 3pm and 4pm respectively.

Sometimes when I glance at the reminder I notice I’ve slipped into negative thinking, worry, self-doubt, playing small or forgetting my true mission, my power, or my purpose.

If this sounds a bit whacky and out there, you bet it is.

Frankly, it costs no money and about 1 minute of time a day, so why not give it a go and see if it helps you start to start taking action to create the inner transformation you’re looking for.

If you have any questions about ‘what if’ questions, just hit reply and ask away!

In Service,

Graham
